Auckland Women’s Nines set for August

The Auckland Rugby League and New Zealand Institute of Sport have teamed up to host the inaugural Auckland Women’s Nines on Sunday, August 26.

The one-day tournament is open to all Auckland Rugby League clubs and tertiary institutions, and will be held at the home of the Otara Scorpions, Ngati Otara Park.

The event comes at the conclusion of Auckland’s Farrelly Photos women’s competitions, which this year have run over shortened seasons to accommodate the end-of-year NRL Women’s Premiership.

Auckland Rugby League general manager Greg Whaiapu said the Auckland Women’s Nines was an event for all players, no matter their experience in the game.

“This tournament not only extends the rugby league season for our current players who won’t be involved in the NRL Women’s Premiership, but it is also a great opportunity for new women to give rugby league a go,” Whaiapu said.

“It’s good to be able to team up with NZIS on another project as well, with the ARL having launched some exciting youth-focussed projects with them earlier this year.”

The deadline for registrations is Friday, August 10, with forms to be sent to olivia.s@aucklandleage.co.nz.
