Vale Des White, Immortal and League Legend

 REMEMBERING

Auckland Rugby League are saddened to join the New Zealand rugby league and sporting community in mourning following the passing of Des White. White was a player and coach for both Auckland and New Zealand throughout the late '40s, ‘50s and ‘60s.

Des White started playing for Ponsonby in 1947 where he spent his entire grassroots career. In 1952, Des White helped his home club of Ponsonby claim all four major trophies in the Auckland competitions – the Fox Memorial Shield, Roope Rooster, Stormont Shield and Rukutai Shield.

It wasn’t long before his talents where noticed being selected as the fullback for the Auckland Colts to play the Kangaroos at Carlaw Park in 1949. Within 12 months, White was representing New Zealand against Great Britain. White was captaining Auckland by 1950, as well. Following his playing career, White was a selectors and coach for Auckland, also coaching New Zealand in 1961.

In 1951, Des White slotted a penalty after the fulltime siren to beat France 16-15. White also played in the first ever televised match of rugby league. White broke many goal kicking and point scoring records throughout his playing career with the record for Ponsonby (794) and Kiwis (467).

White’s achievements and the mark he left on the game of rugby league have been recognised long since he retired making the NZRL Team of the Century and Legends of League. In 2008, White was a part of the inaugural ARL Immortal inductees.

The Auckland Rugby League would like to extend sincere thoughts and condolences to the White whānau at this time.
