OUR WHARE, OUR WHĀNAU, OUR WAY: BUILDING A POSITIVE RUGBY LEAGUE COMMUNITY

In the heart of ARL’s community, a powerful initiative is taking root, transforming the way we engage with the sport and each other.

"Our Whare, Our Whānau, Our Way" is more than just a slogan; it’s a commitment to creating a positive, inclusive, and respectful environment across all levels of the game. Launched by ARL in 2023, this initiative has quickly become the cornerstone of our game, emphasising the values that make rugby league a sport for everyone.

At its core, "Our Whare, Our Whānau, Our Way" reflects the essence of what it means to be part of the rugby league community. The word "whare" symbolises our house, a place where everyone is welcome, but where respect and adherence to the rules are expected. "Whānau" signifies our extended family—the players, coaches, supporters, volunteers, and officials—who all play a vital role in creating a supportive and unified community. "Our Way" speaks to the collective responsibility we all share in upholding the standards that make rugby league a great game.

One of the key focuses of this initiative is promoting positive sideline behaviour. ARL recognises that the behaviour of supporters, parents, and coaches on the sidelines can have a significant impact on the game’s atmosphere. Negative behaviour, such as bullying, swearing, or abusing referees and players, can quickly ruin what should be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. "Our Whare, Our Whānau, Our Way" serves as a constant reminder of the standards we expect from our community. Through clear messaging and education, ARL is working to build awareness and set the tone for game day conduct. This effort is not just about enforcing rules but about creating an environment where respect, support, and enjoyment are the norms. Duane Mann, GM Clubs & Partnerships, reflects on the importance of this initiative: "Our Whare, Our Whānau, Our Way is about more than just promoting good behaviour—it's about fostering a culture where everyone feels safe, supported, and valued.”

“It's crucial for the growth and sustainability of our sport that we create an environment where players, officials, and supporters can thrive."

The success of "Our Whare, Our Whānau, Our Way" depends on the collective effort of all ARL’s Auckland clubs. These clubs are not only aligned with the initiative but are actively working to develop safe spaces that foster positive interactions both on and off the field. This initiative ties into the nationwide "Be a Sport" program, amplifying its reach and impact. By fostering a culture of respect and inclusion, ARL aims to ensure that every participant—whether a player, referee, supporter, or volunteer—feels valued and supported. The initiative is about more than just preventing negative behaviour; it’s about actively promoting the positive, uplifting the community, and ensuring that rugby league remains a sport that brings people together.

"Our Whare, Our Whānau, Our Way" is also deeply committed to the well-being of all participants. This includes mental and physical health, which are crucial to the overall enjoyment and sustainability of the sport. ARL has partnered with organisations like "I am Hope" to promote mental health awareness, particularly through events like Wellbeing Week. These efforts ensure that the rugby league community is not just strong on the field but off it as well. Youth development is another critical component of the initiative. By instilling the values of respect and positive behaviour from a young age, ARL is helping to nurture the next generation of rugby league players and supporters. Events like the "Our Whare Hui" bring together youth players and their families to establish standards for behaviour and build a strong foundation for the future. Rebecca Russell, CEO of ARL, emphasises the initiative's long-term vision:

"Our Whare, Our Whānau, Our Way is about creating a legacy of respect and unity within our community. We're not just focused on today; we're building the foundation for future generations to enjoy and love rugby league in a positive and inclusive environment."

Since its launch, "Our Whare, Our Whānau, Our Way" has received widespread support from clubs, players, and the wider community. The initiative’s clear and compelling messaging resonates with everyone involved, making it easier to adopt and uphold the values it promotes. The visible changes in sideline behaviour, the increased sense of community, and the positive feedback from participants are all testaments to the initiative’s success. The future of rugby league in Auckland is bright, thanks in part to the "Our Whare, Our Whānau, Our Way" initiative. ARL is committed to continuing this journey, working with clubs and the community to ensure that rugby league remains a sport that everyone can enjoy. By respecting our house, our whānau, and our way, we are building a legacy that will benefit generations to come.
